Program Overview

Primary care physicians are most often the first to recognize the signs and symptoms of cancer, provide a preliminary diagnosis, and refer patients to oncology specialists. However, a significant number of multiple myeloma patients experience delay in diagnosis and, therefore, also experience delayed treatment. Early recognition and referral of multiple myeloma patients before they have significant disease burden is especially important as it has been demonstrated to translate into improved patient outcomes. Presenting a challenge, multiple myeloma patients often present with symptoms that are non-specific in nature. Furthermore, no single test will provide a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, thus primary care physicians must be able to navigate the differential diagnosis of this malignancy. This activity will focus on key symptoms and signs which, when presented to the primary care or internal medicine clinician, may trigger further investigation of multiple myeloma in the primary care setting. This activity will highlight common symptoms, what is the current standard of care in the assessment process, and what diagnostic tools are available to aid in the diagnosis.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care physicians who have an interest in enhancing their clinical skills in recognizing the signs and symptoms of multiple myeloma in primary care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

• Recognize the common symptoms, frequency of presenting features, risk factors, and demographics of patients with multiple myeloma
• Recall NCCN and IMWG recommended diagnostic tests for multiple myeloma including considerations for their strengths and limitations, and their interpretation in making a differential diagnosis of this disease

Dr. Edward Stadtmauer completed his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and served his internship and residency in internal medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. He completed his fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of Pennsylvania where he is currently chief of the Hematologic Malignancies Section of the Abramson Cancer Center.

Board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, Dr. Stadtmauer is a reviewer for numerous journals and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is widely published on the subjects of acute and chronic leukemia, autologous bone marrow transplantation, and multiple myeloma. Dr. Stadtmauer’s writings have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Annals of Internal Medicine, Blood, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and The New England Journal of Medicine, among others.

Dr. Craig Wynne received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia. Dr. Wynne is currently assistant professor of clinical medicine and lead physician, E.S. Cooper Practice, at the University of Pennsylvania. He is certified by the American College of Physicians.
