It is strongly recommended that first time Managing Myeloma member physicians seeking Point of Care (PoC) CME credit, read the following description and instructions entirely since it provides important information concerning the purpose of this activity as well as the requirements for receiving credit. An internet connection is all that is required to begin a Point of Care search.
The individuals listed from MediCom Worldwide, Inc. reported the following for this activity: Joan Meyer, executive director, Jacqui Brooks, MBBCH, MRCPsych, vice president of medical education, Gene Tombler, PhD, medical director have nothing to disclose.
The American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes Point of Care CME as practice-based learning that takes place in support of specific patient care. The physician uses a computer-based clinical decision-making support tool at the point of care to ask a clinical question, search evidence-based sources (from the approved list) for practice recommendations and then apply a recommendation appropriate to the patient. It is recognized that even in cases when the evidence-based recommendation is not appropriate for the patient, the physician still gains knowledge in the process.
As a practicing physician, you are likely already performing clinical-based question searches as you seek evidence-based practice recommendations and then appropriately apply them to your patient. Now you can receive PoC CME credit for doing so, but in a structured format that ensures that you have optimally utilized your learning and application skills while also recording these practice application related search sessions. Managing Myeloma provides an Internet PoC tool and documentation process that meets the criteria set forth by the AMA. Our PoC CME is designed to be a structured, self-directed, online learning program for physicians concerning topics relevant to their clinical practice. This activity is driven by a reflective process in which you, the physician, must document your clinical question, the sources consulted, and the application to your practice.
This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians who provide care and treatment to oncology patients.
In order to participate, you must be a member of our website and be logged into the site. You must also select the opt-in option that allows you to earn CME credits for your search. Credit can only be awarded based on individual user sessions defined by membership login and logout.
Your search must be conducted in the context of a specific question directly concerning your clinical practice. Please record your question since you will be required to provide this information through our online PoC evaluation report form in order to receive credit. Upon successful completion, a certificate is available to print. The estimated time to complete this activity including review of the material is 30 minutes.
Using the PoC tool, a physician member may search an answer to a specific clinical question within the list of approved websites. The PoC tool provides links for reference resources which include PubMed, the International Myeloma Foundation: Doctors, the National Cancer Institute, Cancer 411.org, The Oncologist, Annals of Oncology, sections of Managing Myeloma.com and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). These sites are our approved sources since they use unbiased search algorithms, provide information appropriate to physicians and provide evidence-based information and/or peer-reviewed literature. While you are not limited to these sites, all materials you use in PoC must be current, appropriate to the physician, evidence-based and/or peer-reviewed and you must report all sites visited. You must visit at least one approved source! You will need to remember to book mark www.managingmyeloma.com since you must return to Managing Myeloma to complete the online PoC evaluation report form in order to receive credit.
The objectives of internet PoC are to:
Receiving credit for your PoC CME activity is relatively easy. However, remember that you must be a registered member, a physician, and be logged on to the Managing Myeloma site. The online PoC activity evaluation report must be completed and submitted before you can receive credit. The form requests the specific, clinical question related to your patient, the site(s) you visited to obtain your information, a brief summary of your search findings, whether you found an answer to your specific question, whether the search resulted in a change in your knowledge of the subject and the applicability and manner in which you applied this knowledge in your practice. You will also be given the opportunity to provide feedback on the overall PoC CME tool and process. Once you submit the completed form online, you may print your certificate!
