Dr. George Somlo received his medical degree at the University of Semmelweis Medical School, Budapest, Hungary, and completed an internship in head and neck surgery at the National Cancer Institute, Budapest, as well as an internship and residency in internal medicine at Long Beach VAMC-UC, Irvine. He continued his postgraduate studies as a fellow in hematology/bone marrow transplantation, and medical oncology and therapeutics at City of Hope National Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Somlo is a professor and director of breast oncology, Department of Medical Oncology and Therapeutics Research, City of Hope National Medical Center, as well as co-director of their breast program.

Dr. Somlo is board certified in internal medicine, with subspecialty certification in hematology and medical oncology. He holds memberships in the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Myeloma Society, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is a reviewer for multiple journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Leukemia, Clinical Cancer Research, and The Oncologist, among others. Dr. Somlo has written hundreds of book chapters, journal articles, and abstracts. His research interests include translational research in locally advanced/inflammatory breast cancer, the role of autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma, and stem cell biology.
